The Klevener: Alsace's Most Mysterious Wine

The Klevener de Heiligenstein is a white wine produced in the Alsace vineyard around the village of Heiligenstein, from the savagnin rose grape variety.

It was in Heiligenstein, in 1742, that the Klevener — with its golden robe — first appeared, following a journey to the Italian Tyrol by the then mayor Wantz.

It is cultivated over an area of approximately 97 hectares, primarily in Heiligenstein but also across 4 surrounding villages, making it a rare wine — considered unofficially as the 8th Alsatian grape variety.

A distant cousin of the savagnin rose and gewurztraminer, the Klevener has a complex and well-developed aromatic profile. Beyond its fruity notes, it reveals mineral aromas as well as hints of honey and spice.

This underappreciated wine is the perfect companion throughout your Alsatian tastings.
